One thing has been driving Hindu to reach greater heights in athletics — to be able to stand on her own feet! This 17-year-old physically challenged girl cannot use the heel portion of her feet.

Hindu, a resident of West Mambalam, has won more than 50 medals and achiever awards from various organisations.

The Class XII student of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Saidapet, has been participating in athlete meets for physically challenged since Class VI in State, national and international tournaments and has never returned home without a medal.

“Every time I take on the field, I feel nervous. But I am determined to win,” says Hindu, who participates in running, discus throw, shot put, javelin and long jump. She is being trained by M.S. Nagarajan, president, Paralympics Association of Tamil Nadu.

Encouraging parents

Hindu was born with bent feet. She runs using only her forefoot. Her feet are full of marks of injury as she cannot wear a shoe. Her parents have been the source of encouragement for Hindu.

“We did not want her to feel low or deterred by her disability. We want her to feel equal and confident by encouraging her in what she is good at,” says her mother, Sudha Alayamani, who accompanies her daughter during all her tournaments.

Ms. Sudha says that she shows interest in art as well as sports. Seeing her talent, she was identified and encouraged by Rajamanickam, a personal trainer.

Employees of SBI, Adyar, have been supporting Hindu financially during her tournaments.

Playing at Karnataka in 2006 was her debut at national level contest. She bagged her first international gold in 2008 at the International Sports and Talent Meet for Challenged held at Chennai.

She was among the 10 differently-abled youngsters selected among 300 entries to receive the Ascendas Excellence Award 2011 and she has also won Achiever Award from Indian Council for Cultural Development.

Solute that brave girl and friends focus on your goal I am sure one day you also make history...just believe on yourself and God .....
